Is the Medivet Healthcare Plan worth it?
A neutral guide to Medivet Healthcare Plan costs, what is included, what is not included, and how to compare the annual cost with paying separately.
The Medivet Healthcare Plan is a monthly preventive-care plan for routine pet healthcare. It is designed to spread the cost of predictable items such as vaccinations, flea and worm protection, and routine health checks.
Whether it is worth it depends on your pet, your local Medivet prices, which services you would use anyway, and whether you value the convenience of spreading routine costs across the year.
This guide explains the current Medivet plan prices we found, what is included, what is not included, and how to do your own annual-cost calculation.

Quick verdict
The Medivet Healthcare Plan is more likely to be worth it if:
- you would buy annual vaccinations from Medivet anyway;
- your pet needs year-round flea, tick and worm protection;
- you value two routine health checks across the year;
- you would use the plan's discounts on future Medivet treatment or medication.
It is less likely to be worth it if:
- you can buy equivalent parasite treatment more cheaply elsewhere and your vet agrees that is suitable;
- you may move or switch practice during the 12-month plan period;
- you mainly want cover for illness, accidents, surgery, referrals or emergencies;
- you would not use several of the included routine-care benefits.
The safest answer is not "yes" or "no" for everyone. Work out the annual plan cost, then compare it with the services you would realistically use.
How much does the Medivet Healthcare Plan cost?
At the time this guide was reviewed, Medivet listed these monthly prices:
| Pet | Monthly price | Annual cost calculation |
|---|---|---|
| Cat | £15.50 | £15.50 x 12 = £186 |
| Small dog under 20kg | £17.50 | £17.50 x 12 = £210 |
| Large dog over 20kg | £19.50 | £19.50 x 12 = £234 |
| Rabbit | £12 | £12 x 12 = £144 |
Medivet's dog and cat plan pages describe the plans as operating on a 12-month subscription basis. Ask your local clinic for the current monthly price, any payment terms, and what happens if you cancel or move.
What is included?
Medivet describes the standard Healthcare Plan as including:
- routine vaccinations;
- parasite protection;
- six-monthly nose-to-tail health checks;
- microchipping;
- 10% off veterinary care and prescribed medication;
- 15% off dental procedures.
Medivet's dog and cat plan pages say each pet is eligible for two health checks per year: one at the vaccination appointment and one interim health check. The health checks may be performed by a vet or a nurse.
What is not included?
The Medivet Healthcare Plan is not pet insurance. It is mainly for routine preventive care.
Medivet says a nose-to-tail health check is a routine exam for a pet that appears healthy. It is not intended for a pet with a new or ongoing health issue. Those health issues normally require a vet consultation charged at the standard rate, unless the pet is on a separate Unlimited Medivet Healthcare Plan add-on.
That means you should not treat the plan as cover for:
- unexpected illness or injury;
- surgery;
- referral or specialist treatment;
- diagnostic tests;
- out-of-hours emergency care;
- all consultations.
Pet insurance and health plans solve different problems. A health plan can help with routine predictable costs; insurance is for larger unexpected costs, depending on the policy.
A branch-level example: Medivet Southgate
Medivet Southgate's published practice prices are useful because they show both standard prices and Healthcare Plan prices side by side.
At the time we checked, Medivet Southgate listed:
| Item | Standard price | Healthcare Plan price |
|---|---|---|
| Standard vet appointment | £69.00 | £62.10 |
| Dog annual vaccination booster | £70.00 | Included |
| Dog annual booster including kennel cough | £114.00 | Included |
| Puppy vaccination course 1st + 2nd | £108.00 | Included |
| Cat annual vaccination booster | £79.00 | Included |
| Kitten vaccination course 1st + 2nd | £118.00 | Included |
This does not prove every Medivet branch has the same standalone prices. Use it as an example of the calculation method, then check your own clinic's current price list.
How to calculate whether it is worth it
Use this simple method:
- Start with the annual plan cost for your pet.
- List the included services you would definitely use.
- Add the standalone price for each service at your local clinic.
- Keep discounts separate from included services.
- Compare the realistic total with the annual plan cost.
For example, a small dog plan at £17.50 per month costs:
£17.50 x 12 = £210 per year
A large dog plan at £19.50 per month costs:
£19.50 x 12 = £234 per year
A cat plan at £15.50 per month costs:
£15.50 x 12 = £186 per year
If the vaccinations, parasite protection and health checks you would otherwise buy cost more than the plan, the plan may offer good value. If the difference is small, convenience and budgeting may be the main benefit. If you would not use the included services, the plan may not save money.
Treat discounts as possible extra value
Medivet advertises 10% off veterinary care and prescribed medication, plus 15% off dental procedures for plan members.
Those discounts can matter, but they are not the same as included services. You only benefit from them if your pet needs those services and you choose to buy them from Medivet.
For a fair calculation, separate:
| Value type | How to treat it |
|---|---|
| Included routine care | Count it if your pet would use it anyway |
| Discounts | Count only if you realistically expect to use the discounted service |
| Savings claims | Check the assumptions and whether they match your pet |
Medivet's savings note says the advertised saving is based on the cumulative cost of individual treatments minus the subscription charge, and excludes the extra discount benefits.
Questions to ask before joining
Before signing up, ask your Medivet clinic:
- What is the current monthly price for my pet?
- Is my pet classed as a small or large dog for plan pricing?
- Which flea, tick and worm products are included?
- How often are parasite products dispensed?
- Are vaccinations, kennel cough and primary courses included for my pet?
- What happens if I cancel before the 12 months are complete?
- Can I transfer the plan if I move to another Medivet clinic?
- Is the Unlimited consultation add-on available, and what does it exclude?
- Can I have the plan terms in writing?
Ask the same questions when renewing, because prices and inclusions can change.
Bottom line
The Medivet Healthcare Plan may be worth it if you already plan to use Medivet for routine vaccinations, parasite protection and regular health checks. It may also help if you prefer predictable monthly payments.
It is not a substitute for pet insurance and it does not mean every appointment or treatment is free. The most reliable way to decide is to compare your annual plan cost with the routine services your pet would genuinely use.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Medivet Healthcare Plan pet insurance?
No. The Medivet Healthcare Plan is a routine preventive-care plan, not pet insurance. It can help spread the cost of vaccinations, parasite protection and routine checks, but it does not replace cover for unexpected illness, injury, referral treatment or surgery.
How much does the Medivet Healthcare Plan cost?
At the time this guide was reviewed, Medivet listed cats at £15.50 per month, rabbits at £12 per month, small dogs under 20kg at £17.50 per month and large dogs over 20kg at £19.50 per month. Confirm current prices with your local Medivet clinic before joining.
What is included in the Medivet Healthcare Plan?
Medivet describes the plan as including routine vaccinations, parasite protection, two six-monthly nose-to-tail health checks, microchipping when clinically recommended, and discounts on veterinary care, prescribed medication and dental procedures. Exact use can depend on your pet and clinic.
What is not included in the Medivet Healthcare Plan?
The standard plan does not make all vet appointments free. Medivet says nose-to-tail checks are for pets that appear healthy; consultations for new or ongoing health issues are normally charged at the standard rate unless a separate Unlimited add-on applies.
How do I calculate whether the plan is worth it?
Multiply the monthly price by 12, then compare that annual cost with the services you would realistically buy anyway: vaccinations, parasite protection, routine health checks and microchipping if needed. Treat discounts on future treatment as possible extra value, not guaranteed savings.
